What is montessori?
Founded by Italian physician, Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), the Montessori Approach is a revolutionary method of observing and supporting the natural development of the child. The method is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play.
A Montessori classroom is beautifully crafted allowing children to explore and discover knowledge which aids the development of their maximum potential. Almost all instruction in a Montessori atmosphere takes place on an individual basis which allows the directress to become familiar with the child’s individual characteristics and needs.
The Montessori pedagogy relies on specially designed material. The apparatus is didactic and begins with simple learning elements for toddlers, gradually continuing onto more complex tasks. Each set of equipment is designed to provide the child with a direct and wholesome experience.
The classrooms are grouped into three year age cycle groups (3-6 years; 6-9 years; 9-12years) which encourage younger children to learn from older ones which in turn allow older children to act as role models to their younger peers. This structure also facilitates a warm, stable and secure environment for the child as children remain under the heed of one directress for an extended time frame.
Montessori environments encourage learning of the child rather than teaching. The directress (teacher) plays a passive yet enabling role where she maintains the classroom ensuring that all activities are child friendly, easily accessible, sensorially enriched and beneficial to the holistic development of the child. The directress is consistently available to respond to the needs of her learners and serves as an inspiring and positive reinforcement agent who guides and manipulates them towards self-study, independence and creativity.
